Who is the intended audience (i.e. age, gender, socioeconomic status, race)? How
can you tell?
This speech is aimed at people mostly in adulthood, who have already passed the stages of
school and university, people who already work and need to stop procrastinating to fulfill
their future projects. There are all kinds of people of any type of gender in the audience,
they can be great entrepreneurs, people who just want to start a business, professionals,
salespeople, etc.
What strategies does the speaker use to engage the intended audience?
For the audience to pay attention to the topic being talked about, certain skills are needed
from the speaker. A basic but very important one is to demonstrate confidence in what one
is narrating. Also speak clearly and precisely, without making redundancies. The use of
images in the speech helps people connect with what the speaker is narrating and find it
more fun and dynamic, thus making it easier for our brain to understand what is being
explained. The strategy that caught my attention the most is to use humor or comedy so that
listeners connect with you, people like to listen to someone who has charisma and is
interested in the topic, who tells their own experience, that way they feel identified.
Does the speaker select a topic that is appropriate for the target audience?
Yes, because most of the audience are older people who have already gone through every
stage the speaker is narrating and can feel totally identified with the topic. On the other
hand, if you explain this to a student, whether in high school or university, Will they
understand? Yes, but most of them still do not work or need to support themselves, which
is why they will not clearly know how procrastination also affects people in their adult life,
not just when you have to hand in assignments or projects at university or school. These
people who are sitting listening need to get out of this vicious cycle of procrastination,
otherwise they will not be able to keep progressing in their lives.
How does the speaker take into account the occasion, location, and audience size?
On each occasion we need a different way of narrating something, we cannot always be
joyful or tell jokes, we must first identify what type of situation we are in, whether formal
or informal, happy or sad. In this case the speaker takes a jovial and slightly comical
posture, thus fulfilling his purpose which is to educate the listeners but in an entertaining
way. With respect to the location, the speaker first has to know where the place he is going
to show is, that way he would know how to modulate his voice and thus be heard clearly by
everyone. He could not use the same tone of voice in an auditorium as in a small room, he
needs certain extra skills to narrate in a more professional setting. The speaker needs to
know which will be the size of his audience. When the audience is larger, more strategies
are needed so that each person in the audience can feel interested in the topic, for example
adding visual material. In addition, it is necessary to use a language that can be easily
understood by everyone.
What could the speaker do differently to better engage the audience and make the
presentation more effective?
In my opinion to improve the engagement, the interaction between the audience and the
speaker might help. That way people get involved in the topic and can give their point of
view, as well as demonstrate what they are understanding. Another technique could be to
ask questions that leave the audience reflecting and open their minds to wanting to continue
learning.
