Introduction
Internationally, codc officials recognize the need for a modcrn, up-to-date mechanical code addressing the design and installation of
Codea, in this 2006 edition, is dcsigned to meet thesc

nceds through model code regulations that safeguard t l ~ cpublic health and safety in all communities, large and small.
'I'liis comprchcnsi~c~nechanicalcode cstablishcs minimum regulations for niechanical systems using prescriptive and pcrfornlancc-related provisions. It is founded on broad-basccl principles that make possible thc use of new materials and new mechanical
system designs. 'This 2006 edition is fully compatible with all the bzrer~zatiorzalCodeso (I-Codes") published by tlie Intcrnational

The bltcnzcltior~alMecirezilic.cilCode provisions providc many bencfits, aniong which is the model code dcvelopment process that
offers an international forum for mechanical professionals to discuss performance and prescriptivc code requirements. This forum
provides an cxccllcnt arcna to dcbate proposed I-evisions.This model code also encourages international consistency in thc applicalion of provisions.
Development
The first edition of the Interi~atioizalMecl~uizicalCode (1996) was the culmination of an ei'fort initiated in 1995 by a de\~clopnicnt
committee appointed by the International Codc Council ( K C ) and consisting of representatives of tlic thrcc statutory nicmbcrs of
the ICC at that time, incl~~ding:
Building Officials and Code Administrators lnterr~ational,Inc. (BOCA), Intcrnational Conference
of Building Officials (ICBO) and Southern Building Code Congress lntcrnational (SBCCI). The intent was to draft a comprchcnsive sct of regulations for inechanical systems consistent with andinclusive of tlie scope of the cxisting model codes. Technical content of thc latcst model codes proinulgated by BOCA, ICBO and SBCCI was utilized as the basis for the dcvclopmcnt. This 2006
cdition prcsents thc codc as originally issucd, with changes reflected in subsequent editions through 2003, and with changes
approved through the ICC Code Development Proccss through 1005.A new edition such as this is pro~nulgatedcvery three years.
This code is fo~lncicdon principles intcndcd to establish provisions consistent with thc scope of a mechanical code that adequately protects public health. safcty and welfare; provisions that do not unncccssarily incl-easeconslruction costs; provisions that
do not restrict thc use of ncw ~natcrials, products or methods of construction; and provisions that do not give prcfcrcntial treatment to
particular typcs or classcs of materials, products or methods of constnlction.
Adoption
The Iizten~atior~ulMechurzical
Code is available for adoption and use by jurisdictions internationally. Its use within a govern~nc~\tal
jurisdiction is intended to be accomplished throogh adoption by reference in accordance with procccdings establishing thc jurisdiction's laws. At the t i ~ n cof adoption, jurisdictions should insert the appropriate information in provisions requiring spccitic local
information, such as the name of the adopting jurisdiction. These locations are shown in brackctcd words in small capital lcltcrs in
the code and in thc sanlple ordinance. The sample adoption ordinance on page v acldrcsscs several lcey clenlcnts of a codc adoption
ordinance, including tlie information required for insertion into the code text.

In cach codc developmcnt cycle, proposed changes to this codc are considered at the Code Develop~nenlHearings by the ICC

for final action on
the proposed change. Proposcd changes to a code section that has a number beginning wit11 a letter in hrackcts :\re considered by a
different ccdc development corn~niltee. For example, proposed changes to code sections that have the letter [~B]in front (e.g. [ R ]
